Port Makes History on a Very Historic Day for Halifax

Halifax, NS - October 2, 2008 - What is heavier than 50,000 Tyrannosaurs, longer than Lower Water Street and carries over four times the population of Lunenburg? Answer: the cruise ship line-up for the Port of Halifax on October 2, 2008.

Thursday October 2, 2008 will mark a record-breaking day. Four large cruise ships will be berthed in the Port of Halifax, bringing an estimated 9,700 passengers to the waterfront in a single day-more than has ever been recorded before. With a combined weight of 420,599 tonnes and a total length of 1170.43 metres, the ships and passengers will create a spectacular scene in Halifax this Thursday. The economic impact by cruise passengers and crew visiting Halifax this season is expected to reach an estimated $25 million.

This landmark day will begin at 8:00 a.m. when The Victory is scheduled to arrive at the Port. It will be followed by The Constellation and The Jewel of the Seas at 9:00 a.m. and The Explorer of the Seas at 12:00 p.m.

This record breaking day coincides with Halifax's Democracy 250 celebrations - making it a very historic day for the city, the province and the Port.

The Port of Halifax will help celebrate Democracy 250 by presenting commemorative Democracy 250 flags to each of the captains of the cruise ships; as well D250 cake and souvenirs will be available for cruise ship passengers. The Port welcomes people from the community to drop by and join the festivities at Pavilion 22 and along the waterfront at Piers 21 and 22. The Pavilion will be open featuring the best of Nova Scotia crafts and giftware from 7:30 am - 7:00 pm.

"2008 has certainly been a record year for cruise at the Port of Halifax," says Catherine McGrail, Manager of Cruise Development for the Halifax Port Authority. "The Port and its partners have been instrumental in developing our reputation as the premier port of call in Atlantic Canada," adds McGrail. The 2008 season will see between 215,000 and 220,000 cruise ship passengers onboard 126 cruise ships.
