Over 240,000 cruise tourists visit Halifax in award-winning season

October 27, 2011 – HALIFAX, N.S. – The Jewel of the Seas is docked at the Halifax Seaport today, bringing as many as 2,000 cruise passengers to the region for the day. It is the last vessel to call Halifax in what has been a highly successful, award-winning cruise season.

In 2011, 122 vessels called Halifax, including seven inaugural visits. More than 240,000 people have visited Halifax via cruise ship this year, including about 10,000 on Oct. 6 – the busiest day of the season.

“It has been another tremendous season for cruise in Halifax,” said Halifax Port Authority Manager of Cruise Development, Cathy McGrail. “We’ve maintained visitor totals well over 200,000 for four years running, which is a tremendous accomplishment and a boon for the city and province.”

The cruise industry in Halifax contributes an estimated $50 million in economic impact annually for Nova Scotia, accounting for approximately eight per cent of all tourism for the province.

The season wasn’t just successful in terms of traffic – it was also a season of recognition as the Port of Halifax and its partners received two prestigious cruise honours.

The first was received in March as Halifax earned the Most Efficient Port Services Award from Dream World Cruise Destinations magazine for having the “most efficient combination of pilotage, port agency services, customs clearance and good working relations with the operations departments of cruise lines.”

The second honour, received in December at the Seatrade Europe conference in Hamburg, Germany, came from Seatrade Insider for a “highly commended contribution to Destination of the Year.”

“Between numerous shore excursions and the convenience of shops and services available at the Halifax Seaport and on the waterfront, we believe we have a lot to offer cruise guests,” McGrail said. “The Halifax Port Authority and its many partners work hard to deliver a memorable vacation experience for our guests and we’re thrilled to have received these two awards in recognition of that.”
